What is Asbestos? A Class 1 Human Carcinogen, Asbestos is a general term for 6 naturally occurring Silicates belonging to the Serpentine and Amphibole mineral classes. 14 million houses were built during the period Asbestos was extensively used. Asbestos was finally banned from use in the UK in the year 1999. 4000 people die a year due to asbestos related diseases.
The Health and Safety Executive attributes the 'single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK' to inhalation of asbestos fibres. Annually responsible for approximately 4000 deaths, the widespread use of asbestos containing materials (ACM) in the construction industry up until the late 1990's means that today there remains a wide range of ACM still in use throughout domestic and industrial sites across the United Kingdom.

Laws Regarding Asbestos The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012 is key piece of legislation that covers the prohibition of asbestos as well as the control of asbestos products at work and the licensing of work on asbestos materials. Since May 2004 people responsible for non-domestic premises have needed to know about Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM's) within their premises, their location, condition and how to manage them. This requires each building to have an asbestos register and management plan available on site. Additionally, if you are working on a domestic premises, you have a duty of care to ensure that any potential asbestos containing materials (ACM's) are not disturbed during your work and an asbestos survey must identify these and assist in planning the work.
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) came into force on 6 April 2015, replacing CDM 2007. The new CDM regulations apply to domestic premises in addition to commercial premises. The CDM Regulations 2015 state that asbestos surveys must be undertaken on domestic premises prior to refurbishment works with the responsibility being placed on the Principal Designer and or the Main Contractor (who takes on the duties of the client under the Regulations).
